Concussion | Definition
A concussion is a brain injury that disrupts a persons normal physical, cognitive, and behavioral functioning. A concussion can occur from a physical impact to the head or by a sudden stopping of movement (such as whiplash). A person does not have to pass out or lose consciousness to suffer a concussion.
Concussion | Symptoms
Common symptoms of concussions include:
- Headaches;
- Dizziness;
- Confusion;
- Feeling hazy, foggy, or groggy;
- Amnesia, or trouble remembering things;
- Disorientation;
- A loss of consciousness;
- Behavior or personality changes;
- Lack of coordination;
- Nausea or vomiting;
- Fatigue;
- Anxiety or depression; and
- A change in sleep patterns.
Concussion | Medical Treatment
Medical treatment for concussions includes neurological medical care, neuro-psychologist care, magneto encephalography (MEG) scanning, and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) .
- DTI examines the integrity of the white matter tracts by measuring the degree and direction of water diffusion providing a potential maker for white matter injury.

Concussions | Second Impact Syndrome
If a second concussion occurs before the previous concussion injury is healed, the second impact will more likely cause brain swelling and other widespread damage. There will also be higher risk of long term problems and in the most severe cases, cause death.
