Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

A mild traumatic brain injury victim is a someone who has had an induced physiological disruption of their brain functions. This includes:

  • Any period of loss of consciousness;
  • Any loss of memory for events immediately before or after the accident;
  • Any alteration in mental state at the time of the accident (i.e. feeling dazed, disoriented, or confused); and
  • Focal neurological deficits that may or may not be transient.

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury | Diagnoses

For it to be considered a mild injury (and not a full traumatic brain injury) the following is considered:

  • An initial loss of consciousness that does not exceed 30 minutes;
  • An initial Glascow Coma Scale (GCS) of not less than 13 (out of 15); and,
  • Post-Traumatic Amnesia (PTA) that does not extend over 24-hours following the injury producing incident.

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury | Injury Producing Events

Mild traumatic brain injury producing accident events include:

  • Being struck on the head;
  • The head striking an object; and
  • The brain undergoing an acceleration and or deceleration movement (i.e. whiplash) even without direct external trauma to the head.

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury | Serious Injury

Mild traumatic brain injury symptoms are typically overlooked in the face of more dramatic physical injuries such as a herniated disc in the neck or back.
